Priority areas<\/h3>\n

Caribaea Initiative focuses its efforts on strategic geographic areas across the insular Caribbean. Priority is given to islands with high levels of endemism, fragile ecosystems, and significant conservation challenges. Our programs are implemented across a variety of territories, reflecting the regional nature of our mission. While we have a particularly strong presence in the French Antilles, including Guadeloupe and Martinique, we are also actively involved in several other parts of the Caribbean, such as the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and other island territories of the region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Vulnerable species and ecosystems<\/h3>\n
\n\t

Our research projects mainly relate to the most vulnerable species and ecosystems<\/strong> (in particular wetlands<\/strong>, dry forest<\/strong>, coastal ecosystems<\/strong>, and coral reefs<\/strong>) endemic to the Caribbean islands<\/strong>, as well as agroecosystems<\/strong>.
\nProjects aim to better define the conservation status of the endemic species and ecosystems studied, in particular, and to help develop management plans.<\/p>\n

In addition, we develop databases where the available knowledge relating to Caribbean biodiversity is recorded. This information serves to draw up summaries identifying, in an overall sense, the factors defining the region\u2019s conservation status.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Invasive exotic species<\/h3>\n

We are particularly interested in invasive exotic species<\/strong> and their impact on the fauna and flora endemic to the Caribbean islands<\/strong>. We would like to be able to predict at an early stage, the consequences of introducing new species and how we can help reinforce the steps taken to detect and regulate these species, and the related monitoring programmes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

We approach the impact of climate change<\/strong> on biodiversity in the Caribbean islands<\/strong> in particular by studying how endemic species can adapt to changes in environmental conditions (temperature, salinity, etc.).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Urban ecology<\/h3>\n
\n\t

Our projects contribute to the development of urban ecology in the Caribbean islands<\/strong> by studying how endemic species adapt to urban and peri-urban settings<\/strong>. The objective of these studies is to unite the various stakeholders - scientists, town planners and architects - around a new concept of urban spaces to promote the expansion of biodiversity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Ecology of wildlife diseases<\/h3>\n
\n\t

A certain number of our projects relates to the dynamics of zoonoses and interactions between animal and bacterial species, with the aim of better understanding the complex mechanisms governing the health of ecosystems, and how animal and vegetable species interact with human health.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
