Pour comprendre l\u2019origine de cette variabilit\u00e9 d\u2019apparence, des chercheurs ont test\u00e9 deux hypoth\u00e8ses\u00a0: la s\u00e9lection naturelle et la s\u00e9lection sexuelle.\u00a0 <\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>Limia vittata<\/em> est une esp\u00e8ce de poissons appartenant \u00e0 la famille des Poeciliidae. End\u00e9miques de Cuba, ces poissons se retrouvent dans une large vari\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019environnements \u00e0 travers l\u2019\u00eele, allant d\u2019une eau douce \u00e0 une eau tr\u00e8s sal\u00e9e. Ces caract\u00e9ristiques pourraient toutes deux expliquer la variabilit\u00e9 observ\u00e9e dans l\u2019apparence des individus\u00a0: m\u00e2les comme femelles pr\u00e9sentent un nombre de t\u00e2ches noires variables, parfois m\u00eame compl\u00e8tement absentes.<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019une part, des esp\u00e8ces proches comme les guppies sont \u00e9galement connues pour pr\u00e9senter des apparences variables. Chez certaines de ces esp\u00e8ces, les m\u00e2les ayant un pattern de couleur rare ont un avantage reproductif. Autrement dit, la s\u00e9lection sexuelle, via la pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence des femelles, pourrait expliquer la pr\u00e9sence de variations de couleurs au sein de leurs populations. Cependant, la variabilit\u00e9 des environnements dans lesquels les poissons <em>L. vittata<\/em> \u00e9voluent pourrait \u00e9galement expliquer la diversit\u00e9 des apparences. Il est en effet possible que certains environnements favorisent des patterns particuliers sous l\u2019effet de la s\u00e9lection naturelle. Pour mieux comprendre quel m\u00e9canisme est \u00e0 l\u2019origine du polymorphisme observ\u00e9 chez <em>L. vittata<\/em>, des chercheurs ont test\u00e9 les deux hypoth\u00e8ses.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019hypoth\u00e8se de la s\u00e9lection sexuelle a \u00e9t\u00e9 test\u00e9e en laboratoire par un test tr\u00e8s classique dans le domaine\u00a0: le test du choix de partenaire. Chaque individu test\u00e9 est plac\u00e9 au centre d\u2019un aquarium. D\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9 de l\u2019aquarium, un poisson du sexe oppos\u00e9 pr\u00e9sentant de nombreux points noirs est visible, tandis qu\u2019un autre poisson ayant, lui, peu de t\u00e2ches se trouve de l\u2019autre c\u00f4t\u00e9. Apr\u00e8s avoir estim\u00e9 l\u2019importance des t\u00e2ches de poissons captur\u00e9s dans le cadre d\u2019une pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente \u00e9tude, ils ont tent\u00e9 de faire le lien avec les niveaux de salinit\u00e9 de l\u2019eau, mesur\u00e9s aux sites de capture.<\/p>\n<p>Verdict\u00a0? Aucune pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence particuli\u00e8re des m\u00e2les ou des femelles pour des partenaires plus ou moins ponctu\u00e9s. En revanche, les analyses ont mis en \u00e9vidence un lien entre une salinit\u00e9 de l\u2019eau \u00e9lev\u00e9e et une quantit\u00e9 importante de points noirs sur le corps des poissons. Selon les chercheurs, les environnements sal\u00e9s correspondant aux milieux c\u00f4tiers ou aux estuaires pourraient abriter un nombre plus important de pr\u00e9dateurs. Dans ces milieux o\u00f9 la mati\u00e8re organique est importante, les points noirs agiraient comme un camouflage. Les individus qui en sont porteurs \u00e9chapperaient ainsi plus facilement \u00e0 la pr\u00e9dation. Des \u00e9tudes men\u00e9es chez d\u2019autres esp\u00e8ces de poissons ont en effet montr\u00e9 que les pr\u00e9dateurs s\u2019attaquaient d\u2019avantage aux individus ne pr\u00e9sentant pas de t\u00e2ches.
