Full title: Development and implementation of an eradication program for the Tokay Gecko
(Gekko gecko) in Martinique – GEKKOMAR
Aims: Implement an eradication program for the Tokay Gecko in Martinique to protect native species.
Location: Martinique
Dates: 2025-2027
Summary: The project aims to drastically reduce the population of the Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko), a reptile native to Southeast Asia that has become invasive in Martinique, where it threatens native species such as the Turnip-tailed Gecko (Thecadactylus rapicauda) and the Saint Vincent Least Gecko (Sphaerodactylus vincenti). It relies on an innovative method combining the installation of artificial shelters and the manual capture of individuals. A public awareness campaign accompanies the field actions to promote acceptance of invasive species management measures.
The GEKKOMAR project builds on the results of the MERCI project (2021–2023), led by Caribaea Initiative with the support of Interreg Caribbean, which made it possible to develop an adapted capture method. Below is a video presenting the actions carried out:
