Caribaea Initiative is honoured to announce the formalisation of a new partnership with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), marking a major step forward for biodiversity research, conservation and scientific capacity building in the Eastern Caribbean.
The OECS is an international organisation comprising twelve members across the Eastern Caribbean and working to promote regional integration, cooperation and sustainable development. This partnership represents an important recognition of Caribaea Initiative’s long-standing commitment to the study and conservation of Caribbean biodiversity, as well as to the training and support of Caribbean students, researchers and conservation professionals.
Through a Memorandum of Understanding, the OECS Commission and Caribaea Initiative have established a framework for cooperation in biodiversity and wildlife management across OECS Member States. The agreement will support knowledge exchange, scientific research, technical cooperation, capacity building and awareness-raising on biodiversity challenges and sustainable practices.
The collaboration will focus on several key areas, including biodiversity and wildlife research, training programmes and scholarships, public awareness, evidence-based environmental policies, climate change adaptation, biodiversity data systems, scientific publications and joint advocacy.
OECS representatives participated in Caribaea Initiative’s 2025 International Conference in Martinique, dedicated to biodiversity research and conservation in the Caribbean.
For Caribaea Initiative, this agreement is fully aligned with its mission: to support research in conservation biology and wildlife management in the insular Caribbean, strengthen scientific and technical expertise within Caribbean institutions, and promote education and awareness on biodiversity conservation.
By combining the regional mandate of the OECS with Caribaea Initiative’s expertise in biodiversity research, conservation and education, this partnership opens new opportunities to strengthen regional cooperation for the protection of Caribbean biodiversity.
